West Singhbhum
West Singhbhum (Pashchimi Singhbhum) district profile
West Singhbhum (area: 5,351.41 sq km) is one of the districts covered by PACS in Jharkhand. The district of West Singhbhum, or Pashchimi Singhbhum, came into existence in 1990, when the old Singhbhum district was divided. Chaibasa is the district headquarters.
West Singhbhum district forms the southern part of the newly-created state of Jharkhand and is the largest district in the state.
The district is bordered on the north by Khunti district, on the east by the district of Saraikela Kharsawan, on the south by Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj and Sundergarh districts of Orissa, and on the west by Gumla district of Jharkhand and Orissa’s Sundargarh district.
West Singhbhum has dense forests and harbours a variety of flora and fauna. It also contains large deposits of iron ore which are increasingly being mined to feed the growing demand for steel production. Most of the population of West Singhbhum (53%) belongs to the scheduled tribes.
