Sundargarh district profile
Sundargarh is one of the districts covered by PACS in Orissa. The district (area: 9712 sq km) is in the northwestern part of Orissa. It is bordered on the north by Jharkhand, on the south by Jharsuguda, Sambalpur and Debagarh districts, on the east and northeast by the Kendujhar and Paschimi Singhbhum districts of Orissa and Jharkhand, and on the west and northwest by Chhattisgarh’s Raigarh district. Sundargarh town is the district headquarters.
The district is an undulating tableland of different elevations broken up by hill ranges and rivers and streams. Forests occupy an area of 3,534.92 sq km, including 2,664.64 sq km under reserved forests and 612.07 sq km under protected forests. Major rivers include the Brahmani, Ib, Sankha and Koyel.
Sundargarh district comprises three sub-divisions, nine tehsils and 17 community development blocks.
The district has an average literacy rate of 64%, higher than the national average of 59.5%. Around half the population belongs to the scheduled tribes. The malaria infection rate here is three times the national average.
