Siwan district profile
Siwan (area: 2,219 sq km) is one of the districts covered by PACS in Bihar. The district, situated in the western part of north Bihar, is a part of Saran division. Siwan town, located on the eastern bank of the river Daha, is the administrative headquarters.
Siwan is bordered by Gopalganj district in the north and by the river Ghaghra in the south, beyond which lies Balia district of Uttar Pradesh. To the east of Siwan is Saran district; the district of Deoria borders it in the west.
Siwan is part of the alluvium of the broader Indo-Gangetic plain. The southern part of the district, along the river Ghaghra, is marked by ‘draras’, which are typical formations of the sand with a thin layer of clay and silt over them.
Siwan has one of the highest sex ratios among the districts in Bihar. Around 11% of the population belongs to the scheduled castes. Muslims constitute 18% of the population.
