Saran
Saran district profile
Saran (area: 2,641 sq km) is one of the districts covered by PACS in Bihar.
It is a part of Saran division and is also known as Chapra district after its headquarters, Chapra. Sub-divisions are Chapra, Marhawrah and Sonepur. Saran district is bordered by the districts of Siwan and Gopalganj in the north; the Ganga constitutes its southern boundary, beyond which lie the districts of Bhojpur and Patna.
The river Gandak forms the dividing line between Vaishali and Muzaffarpur districts in the east, and in the west is the district of Siwan and Uttar Pradesh’s Balia district. Three rivers, namely the Ganga, Ghaghra and Gandak, encircle the district in the south, northeast and west respectively. The district is entirely constituted of plains but there are quite a few depressions and marshes which cause the formation of three broad natural divisions.
Around 12% of the population of Saran district belongs to the scheduled castes. Muslims constitute around 10% of the population.
