Rural livelihoods change

December 2007

'The changing face of rural livelihoods in India', a paper presented by B N Hiremath, Professor, Institute of Rural Management, Anand, at the national conference on ‘What it takes to eradicate poverty’ organised by the PACS Programme, in New Delhi in December 2007, argues that understanding the livelihood systems of the poor is crucial to effective poverty reduction.

The paper examines the impact of economic growth on the poor in both the agricultural and rural non-farm sectors. It discusses the impact of corporate retail on farmers, small retail outlets, local haats or markets.

The paper also looks at the impact on food security and sheds some light on why technological innovations have not been uniformly successful in improving the condition of farmers.
