Murshidabad district profile

Murshidabad is one of the districts covered by PACS in West Bengal. The district is situated on the left bank of the Ganga, making it extremely fertile. Covering 5,341 sq km, and with a total population of 5.86 million (Census 2001), Murshidabad is densely populated. Baharampur town is the district headquarters.

Murshidabad borders West Bengal’s Maldah district to the north, Birbhum to the west, Bardhaman in the southwest, and Nadia in the south. The international border with Bangladesh’s Rajshahi division is to the east.

Muslims form the largest religious group in the district (64% of total population).
