The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) was envisioned as a strategy to end migration from rural areas by providing deprived households with 100 days of work every year. However, even though the people had heard of this flagship government initiative, they had no idea of how to obtain work under it.

PACS has been working to increase awareness about, demand for and participation in MGNREGA, especially amongst socially excluded groups. As a pilot project, PACS entered into an agreement with the government of Giridh district in Jharkhand where they set up Sahayata Evam Sansadhan Kendras (MGNREGA help centres) to provide MGNREGA-related information to villagers and facilitate grievance redressal where necessary.

Today, positive changes can be seen in the 10 blocks of Giridih where the SESK centres are functioning. The number of work demand applications has increased and people are also filing grievances so that issues such as delayed payments are being addressed.
