Malkangiri
Malkangiri district profile
Malkangiri (area: 5,791 sq km) is one of the districts covered by PACS in Orissa. It was carved out as a separate district from the undivided Koraput district, on October 2, 1992. Its administrative headquarters is Malkangiri town.
The district is divided into two distinct physical areas. The eastern part is hilly and sparsely populated by `primitive tribes’, notable among them the Bondas, Koyas, Porajas and Didayis. The rest of the district is comparatively flat, broken only by a few rocky wooded hills. Almost the entire district is thickly forested. The Potteru, Saberi, Sileru, Kolab and Machhakunda rivers flow through the district.
Around 57% of the population belongs to the scheduled tribes.
Malkangiri district ranks among the top 10 most backward districts in India.
