Kandhamal (Phulbani) district profile

Kandhamal is one of the districts covered by PACS in Orissa. The district (area: 8,021 sq km) was created on April 1, 1993, from the former district of Baudh-Kandhamal. It is located at an altitude of 3,300 feet above sea level. The district headquarters is at Phulbani.

Kandhamal district, located in central Orissa, is bordered by Baudh district in the north, Rayagada district in the south, the districts of Ganjam and Nayagarh in the east, and Kalahandi district in the west.

The district has two sub-divisions -- Phulbani and Balliguda -- which are further divided into 12 blocks and four tehsils.

Around 51% of the population belongs to the scheduled tribes (mainly Kandha); 17% belong to scheduled castes.
