Jalpaiguri district profile

Jalpaiguri is one of the districts covered by PACS in West Bengal. The district is the largest district in north Bengal, covering an area 6,245 sq km. It was established in 1869. The headquarters of the district is Jalpaiguri town, which is also the divisional headquarters of north Bengal.

Jalpaiguri, situated in the northern part of West Bengal, has international borders with Bhutan and Bangladesh in the north and south respectively, and Assam and the Darjeeling hills in the east, west and northwest. The region is crisscrossed with rivers including the Teesta, Torsa, Jaldhaka, Raidak and Sankosh. The district is a gateway to the northeastern states and Bhutan.

Jalpaiguri has a fairly high percentage of population belonging to the scheduled castes (36%) and scheduled tribes (18%).
