The SMOKUS project aims to reduce the socio-economic gap between socially excluded communities, particularly the Santhal tribal community and the general population through non-discriminatory access to livelihoods, health and nutrition.

The project's purpose is to ensure access to sustainable livelihoods and basic services (health and nutrition) for marginalised communities, especially tribals, by bringing them into a sustainable, participatory and inclusive process.

SMOKUS is being supported by PACS for four years and works in 100 villages in three blocks of the Uttar Dinajpur district of West Bengal.

SMOKUS aims

  • Ensuring alternative livelihood options for marginalised communities and families, especially Santhal women.

  • Increased access for pregnant and lactating mothers of the tribal communities to full ante-natal care (ANC) and post-natal care (PNC) services.

  • Increased access to institutional health services by excluded communities.

  • Non discriminatory access to nutrition and health services in Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) centres.

 

About SMOKUS

Shripur Mahila-O-Khadi Unnayan Samity (SMOKUS), registered in 1998 and began inception as a women's organisation in 1990. The uniqueness of the organisation is that the entire management body constitutes only of women.

The organisation believes in ensuring women's representation in the decision making process, including control over resources and prevention of violence against women.

The key area of intervention includes work on child rights, particularly in the realm of child labour, women's rights, and prevention of trafficking and violence.
