Dakshin Dinajpur, or South Dinajpur, is one of the districts covered by PACS in West Bengal. The district was created on April 1, 1992. It comprises two sub-divisions: Balurghat and Gangarampur.
The former Dinajpur district was divided up during partition into West Dinajpur district and East Dinajpur district. East Dinajpur district, now called Dinajpur, became part of East Pakistan, now Bangladesh. The district of West Dinajpur was enlarged in 1956, when the recommendations of the States Reorganisation Act were implemented, with the addition of some areas of Bihar. The district was divided into Uttar Dinajpur and Dakshin Dinajpur on April 1, 1992.
Dakshin Dinajpur has a number of north-south-flowing rivers like the Atreyee, Punarbhaba, Tangon and Brahmani.
Around 28% and 16% of the population belong to the scheduled castes and tribes respectively. Around a fourth of the population is Muslim.
