Bokaro

Bokaro district profile

Bokaro is one of the districts covered by PACS in Jharkhand. The district (area: 2,861 sq km) was established in 1991 by carving out one sub-division consisting of two blocks from Dhanbad district, and six blocks from Giridih district. Bokaro Steel City is the district headquarters. The district is one of the most industrialised zones in India.

Bokaro is a maze of valleys and sub-valleys formed by the Damodar River and its tributaries, which are an important source of water for industry and the various townships that have sprung up along its banks.

Around 13% of the district’s population belongs to the scheduled castes, and an almost equal percentage to the scheduled tribes. Muslims constitute around 11% of the population.
